Stripes

A review of nightly reading

Our current nightly reading material:

1) Mrs. Lee's Stories About Jesus

2) Ten Fat Turkeys

While I detest the above book, Lauren and Gracie seem to love it. You can safely judge this one by its cover. Ridiculous, and I do not recommend it. Our children, however, would.

3) What is Thanksgiving?

I am beginning to think that books about Thanksgiving are not given a lot of credence at the ol' publishing houses, what with the holiday being overshadowed by Halloween and Christmas. Finding a decent book about Thanksgiving is challenging, and this one is as close as I have gotten.

4) Mouse's First Fall

I adore all of the "Mouse's First" books, and this one is especially good.

5) The Going to Bed Book

We have read the above book every night for the last three years. That equates to 1,092 readings. Approximately.

Green room

We went to the pediatrician's office today for the second part of the H1N1 flu mist. We scored the green room today, the one with the prominently positioned trash can.

Pink

For the longest time, Lauren's favorite color was orange. From approximately six months of age until she was about 2 1/2, orange was her preferred color for animals, cups, everything.

However, pink is the new favorite.

When I am laying out clothing at night for the next day, she always tries to maneuver the clothing so that she is the one wearing pink. Sometimes the pink outfit belongs to Gracie, and her face always falls a little when I explain that it is Gracie who will wear pink. We have learned to offer up some form of pink consolation, in the form of either pink shoes or a pink bow. Even if those accessories do not always match, the concession preserves the peace.

This morning as Skip picked out his clothes, Lauren said, "Wear your pink shirt, Daddy!" She said it like it was the most obvious choice in the world, i.e., when in doubt, always choose pink. As it turns out, Skip owns a lone pink shirt (although Lauren did not know), one that I purchased (on sale) a couple of years ago. Needless to say, Skip was a hero in Lauren's eyes today.

Saturday update

Yesterday, we decided to enjoy lunch out and take advantage of some truly spectacular weather. Lunch had some ups and downs, what with Gracie refusing to eat most anything except pie and with Lauren almost flashing the table next to us after lunch. (She is very proud of her ability to remove her pants without assistance.)

Here is a shot of Gracie in a good mood (after pie). We think the pie must give her super powers, and her bib obviously doubles as a cape:

After lunch, we visited the Apple store. Here are the girls enjoying the computers:

Lauren rejected the idea of a computer mouse, as she is only familiar with the mouse from "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" and Mickey, of course:

Finally agreeing to touch this gadget, which is so obviously not a mouse:

Solo

We had to divide and conquer today. Lauren woke up with a high fever so we went to see our physician, after dropping Gracie at preschool.

Some footage of Lauren making herself at home at the pediatrician's office:

Afternoon walk

Since the weather has cooled (and become bearable), one of our favorite things to do is take an afternoon walk through our neighborhood. We count the mailboxes, correctly identify the color of our neighbors' doors, talk about any pets we might encounter -- or, you know, the odd domestic chicken or what not. Yes, some of the neighbors apparently keep chickens. How about that for Deep South flava?!?

Here we are, before the walk, looking at our lovely pumpkin lights:
