Spring Break 2018

Spring break is the ultimate student privilege. Well, that may actually be summer, but spring break is super sweet. Just when the days grow longer and the sun starts shining, there's an entire week at your disposal to fill however you choose.

We chose to have have a super relaxed spring break, at least that was my choice. Lauren opted to train for an upcoming track meet and spent a portion of each day running. Because Grace is an alternate on the team, she was enlisted to train alongside Lauren.  William George even joined in for a few laps.

We also caught up on movies, books and basically hung out. We ate hamburgers and had taco night, and we took a much needed break from all commitments (except track, per Lauren's request).

Also, there was a little baseball, but otherwise a very quiet week.

Skip is taking today off, and we are planning a field trip to close out spring break, since we are devoting the weekend to Easter.

What are your weekend plans?

Bulldog 5K 2018

Last Friday was the trio's school's fifth annual 5K fun run. This was the girls' last and George's first Bulldog Run.

They were so nervous about the 5K that Skip took them the night before to run a practice track. The 5K was held off site this year, and they were nervous about the unfamiliar track. We told them to do their best... there's no pressure... just pace yourself, run your own race and don't worry about what other runners are doing. We were a little worried about George being able to pace himself and not wear himself out too quickly, and we spent some time coaching him on how to start slower, even if his friends appear to be zipping past him.

The girls' grade ran first, along with third and fourth grades. They both had really good races, and Grace especially had a smooth race the entire time. This year we decided to award 1-3 medals for the top boy finishers and another set of medals, 1-3, for the girls. In the past, medals were just awarded to the first three finishers.

Lauren finished first (28:07), and Grace (29.44) came in second. Their sweet friend V came in at third.  Grace, of course, noted that if we had awarded medals for girls and boys, she would have medaled each year. Touche.

George's grade, along with kindergarten and second ran next. George had an awesome pace with a good balance of running and occasionally walking and was able to finish in 33:58, for first place.

The girls checked out after their race and helped cheer for George during his 5K. They offered to run with him, but he wanted to run by himself. One of the guys from the girls' fifth grade class ran with George during his last lap for some moral support. That made George's day.

We also got to visit with the architect of the school's running program, a coach who retired a couple of years ago.  She leaves behind an awesome legacy.

The girls' last 5K could not have been better, and they have really enjoyed running this race each year. It truly is a highlight of the school year.

Field Trip: Next Levl

Last Thursday the Science Olympiad team had a field trip to Next Levl trampoline park. After many, many weeks of studying and experimenting, their coach decided they needed a break by doing something physical. Since it is one of their last field trips as a fifth grader, the duo asked if I would go with them, and I readily said yes. Yes, absolutely. There were two other moms there, and we were all a little bummed that our kiddos are headed to different places next year, meaning that we won't be hanging out as much in the future.

Instead of bemoaning that point, we decided to enjoy a day of bouncing, followed by a delicious Chick-Fil-A lunch. (Coincidentally, our school also had a spirit night fundraiser later that night at CFA.) After 2.5 hours of nonstop bouncing, they refueled and were ready to return to school.

Weekend Update

Happy Monday!

This week we are celebrating spring break, and we are keeping close to home this year. To kick off our week, we had a pretty relaxing weekend. The trio's school had it's fifth annual 5K run Friday (more soon), and we were pretty exhausted by noon on Friday... the trio from having run 3.2 miles and me from helping to set up/break down the event.  We took it very easy Friday afternoon.

We had a pretty chill Saturday as well.  Lauren, Grace and George spent most of the day playing, riding bikes and just hanging out. Our church had a combined worship service Sunday, meaning all three services meet at 10am. Since combined services are always crowded, we made a deal that if they got ready without any arguments whatsoever, we would sit in the balcony. That was huge incentive because they are fascinated with the balcony.

After church, we celebrated Skip's Dad's birthday. Everyone was super excited to celebrate with Poppa.

Happy birthday, Poppa!

Basketball, 2017-2018

We had another great year in basketball. George enjoyed his first year of playing, and the girls had an awesome season that culminated into them playing in the league's championship game. After a nail biting game, they came up one basket short, winning second place in the league. They played hard, and we enjoyed watching them.

We couldn't be more proud of the three of them for working so hard at this sport and for giving it their best.

Science Olympiad

Recently, the Science Olympiad team had a special visitor who brought along several of his reptile friends. Grace, who loves all animals, embraced these little critters, and George was lucky enough to get to visit with them, too, because I was volunteering that day. Lauren is noticeably absent from this photos because she is not a fan of reptiles.

Lauren can be seen sitting at the table behind George, a safe distance from the snakes.

Overall this activity was an excellent recruitment tool for the younger siblings of the current Science Olympiad team.
