Snow Day, February 2014

In a most unusual twist, we experienced another snow fall last week. This time, we received several inches of snow and limited (if any?) ice, creating conditions that were more recreational and just generally more fun.

We often joke that Skip is out of town for any inclement weather, but he was actually home this time. And, when we lost power for about 12 hours, he was unable to work and took a break to play in the snow -- such a rare treat.

We took advantage of our four inches of snow in the front yard by grabbing the laundry basket and having ourselves a luge competition.  We had to play quickly because, much like the Sochi Olympics, our snow was melting fast!

Lauren and Gracie enjoyed their luge/sledding, but William George was reluctant.

We even got to dust off the snow shovel, an artifact from Skip's Syracuse days.

Finally, we convinced George to give sledding a try.

He loved it!!!!

Until...

...they tipped over and he landed in the cold snow.

When the melting began in earnest, we quickly prioritized the rest of our activities.

We built a snow man.

We collected snow for the making of snow cream later.

We threw snow balls.

We... shoveled?

William George loves any kind of broom or shovel so this would have been high on his to-do list.

The duo decided to make a snow family, adding a couple of more snow people to the collection.

Then, William George wanted to help, and I encouraged inclusion.  But then he destroyed the snow man when a creative difference arose.

While George was considering his actions (i.e., time out), Lauren rebuilt her snow man. See that look of determination? Do not mess with that one; she's got a little dash of Tracy Flick in her personality that makes her a force once she is determined.

As for Gracie, she would literally do anything to help Lauren, and therefore, quickly came to her aid in the rebuilding effort.

Don't be surprised to see these two as the first all-female presidential/vice-presidential ticket.

All the while, William George moved on.

Two and a half-year old George barely escaped his next scrape when he (as seen below) told his father, "You need to get control of yourself, Daddy!"

But he is smart enough to know when to leave it alone.

The boys made up and celebrated their reconciliation with a snow ball fight.

By then, the sun was out in full force and the temperatures were quickly climbing. The duo had time for snow angels and then changed out of their wet clothes... just in time for lunch.

That's a wrap on our second official day of snow.

Snow Day, January 2014 (The video edition.)

So a few weeks ago we had an arctic event that ended up producing snow and ice. Although the snow fall was very insignificant, the roads and streets froze quickly. As our city became crippled by ice on all major roadways, causing motorists to be stranded in their cars, children to be stranded at school overnight and many workers to camp out at their workplaces, officials struggled to get our limited snow/ice-fighting resources deployed. (I would be remiss in not giving a shout-out to our small neighborhood for having sand on problematic streets by noon/early afternoon.)

William George and I retrieved the duo from school at 10:30am, and our minivan handled the snow well, with only a slip or two. That left us free to have some play time as seen below:

Valentine's Day, 2014

The trio making hand-made Valentine's for their friends

William George has a party at school this morning, and then I am heading to Children's Theatre with the duo's classes.  What a fantastic way to spend Valentine's Day!

Be extra sweet to those you love today. And remember, if you are single, treat yourself to something very decadent!

Happy Valentine's Day!!!

Snow Day

#nomorechaos

Today is the seventh weather/snow day within the last couple of weeks. The previous days were easy-peasy because our activities included playing in the snow, followed by more playing in the snow. Since yesterday consisted of waiting for ice to melt and today involves waiting to see if our rain turns to snow, we are a little stir crazy.  Thus... the list has been deployed.

Enumerated Update

Grace in her Missoni outfit from the 2011 collaboration with Target

The enumerated update or status update, as Skip and I used to call it, has been in retirement. Today, perhaps briefly, the update is making a little comeback.

Olympics: This is purely Russia-related, but I can barely follow the Olympics. The games are just so... depressing. The atmosphere is bleak, and all of the negative comments about the overall conditions - both in the village and various venues - are off putting.

By way of disclaimer, I normally love the winter games. Shaun White's snowboarding is my favorite feature, but really I like it all... except for the ice skating. I don't care for the sport at all (is it possible to lose one's "woman card"?), but the subjectivity of the points awarded for style - combined with randomly tossing two scores (not discarding the highest and lowest as in previous years) render this an unwatchable event. (Basically, points-trading is on the increase despite flawed efforts to address the problem.)

Regardless, the duo are really into it this time so we need to watch, but Putin's hosting is not making me clamor to get around the television.

Downton Abbey: We have briefly interrupted our no-television streak. Every year during Christmas vacation, we take some time to catch up on a few movies. Movies were lacking this year so we branched out and caught up Downton Abbey. Yes, I know we are the last people on earth to watch Downton, but we were intrigued by Downton when we first heard about it back in 2010. (I should point out that by "we" I mean "me," and Skip would want me to tell you he was merely along for the ride, which he was.) By the time we carved out time for the series, everyone was watching it, and we weren't ready to jump on the bandwagon. We are now current on all four seasons, and a breakdown of our thoughts on Downton will be forthcoming soon. I am trying to talk Skip into a video recap after each show, but season four is almost over (at least via regular viewing; we watched the entire season via iTunes because we are impatient and could not wait). Also, Skip is not sold on the idea. If I can convince him to participate over the next year, we may be recapping Season 5 (like the charming whoorl.com and rageagainsttheminivan.com as seen here. Huge spoiler alert should you click through.).

Related: After typing the above, an interesting and tidy list of films appeared in my Feedly. Check them out here. Some of these may be a little dark for us, but I definitely like this list better than any iTunes, Netflix or AmazonPrimeVideo suggestions.

Peter Pilotto: Pilotto is the latest designer collaboration at Target, and the women's line hit stores Sunday. In four simple words: don't waste your time. As Skip said when we were driving away, "Missoni was really the best collab."

I'm so proud. He has taken the marble from my hand.

Google Doodler: Ever wondered about the person behind the Google doodles? Read about her here.

And that's it for us. Well, that and the fact that we are enjoying another snow day, meaning that my three children have called out some variation of "mommy!!!" at least 7,349 times so far today. (And I will for sure read that sentence 10 or more years from now and be tearful.)

What is happening with you?

Lauren's Milestones: Two Front Teeth

On December 23rd, Lauren lost her first front tooth. The Tooth Fairy promptly came, and she lost her second front tooth on December 28th. She has been sporting an adorable (yet toothless) smile ever since.

100 Days Smarter

Last week marked 100 days of school. To commemorate, the duo counted out 100 Fruit Loops.

William George contributed to the event by eating 100 Fruit Loops.

January Birthdays

We celebrated two birthdays in January. First, we celebrated Gran's birthday...

...with a round of "Happy Birthday To You" for Willliam George.

Next, we celebrated cousin Will's birthday...

...and another round of singing to George...

Birthdays continue to be our favorite!

Daily Photo

William George-ism

We all have stories about our children. One of William George's defining stories came about recently when we were driving on a bright, sunny day. George kept looking at the sun, really staring into it. We kept asking him to stop and explained at length about how looking directly into the sun could harm his eyes, etc. Yet he continued to resume the activity.  Finally, we took it up a notch saying, "William George, do NOT look at the sun, buddy!"

From the backseat he yelled, "I not looking at the sun... the sun's looking at ME!"
