Bulldog 5K 2018

Last Friday was the trio's school's fifth annual 5K fun run. This was the girls' last and George's first Bulldog Run.

They were so nervous about the 5K that Skip took them the night before to run a practice track. The 5K was held off site this year, and they were nervous about the unfamiliar track. We told them to do their best... there's no pressure... just pace yourself, run your own race and don't worry about what other runners are doing. We were a little worried about George being able to pace himself and not wear himself out too quickly, and we spent some time coaching him on how to start slower, even if his friends appear to be zipping past him.

The girls' grade ran first, along with third and fourth grades. They both had really good races, and Grace especially had a smooth race the entire time. This year we decided to award 1-3 medals for the top boy finishers and another set of medals, 1-3, for the girls. In the past, medals were just awarded to the first three finishers.

Lauren finished first (28:07), and Grace (29.44) came in second. Their sweet friend V came in at third.  Grace, of course, noted that if we had awarded medals for girls and boys, she would have medaled each year. Touche.

George's grade, along with kindergarten and second ran next. George had an awesome pace with a good balance of running and occasionally walking and was able to finish in 33:58, for first place.

The girls checked out after their race and helped cheer for George during his 5K. They offered to run with him, but he wanted to run by himself. One of the guys from the girls' fifth grade class ran with George during his last lap for some moral support. That made George's day.

We also got to visit with the architect of the school's running program, a coach who retired a couple of years ago.  She leaves behind an awesome legacy.

The girls' last 5K could not have been better, and they have really enjoyed running this race each year. It truly is a highlight of the school year.
