First Grade Field Trip + Birthday Party

Yesterday scored really high as a fun Friday. William George's first grade class has been studying caves and caverns, and his teacher had coordinated a trip for the class to go spelunking in a local cavern. Skip and I joined George and got to spend some quality time with him and his friends. Skip and George explored the caverns, while I opted to chat with his BFF's mom above ground. (We were "out" at the mention of bats.)

After the cave, they mined for gems and found an impressive array of stones. They played on the park's original 1974 playground (a deathtrap!), and George couldn't quite grasp that it was the same playground I played on as a child, when safety meant coddling.  HA!

We had a picnic lunch with George's friends and his parents. Although we have known his BFF's mom for years, we enjoyed getting to meet the parents of his newer friends, since we will be hanging out for a few years to come. Like the girls' classes, it's a great group of people.

After spelunking, we had a birthday dinner for Grammie, who had made a very simple request: she wanted a really good grilled hamburger. So we picked up a cake, fired up the grill and had dinner.  We enjoyed getting to celebrate with her.

So far our weekend is off to a fantastic start.
