Washington, D.C., Part One

Upon arrival in DC

At long last I have gone through the hundreds of photos we took while visiting the District of Columbia after Christmas. We were packed and ready to leave on December 26th at 6:30am. Because airfare for a family of five is cost prohibitive, especially during the holiday season, we drove. Fortunately, Santa had gifted the trio with the Harry Potter movie collection so we were able to have a movie marathon in the car, meaning that the 12-hour drive wasn't too bad. For the record, the trio were total troopers.

Skip found an apartment on Manhatten Avenue (about half a mile from the White House) that was spacious and home-y so everyone settled in really quickly. (We have found some fantastic deals on HomeAway over the years.)

The next day was unseasonably warm so we arranged our itinerary to spend the entire day outside on foot.  Because George, at 5, still has some limitations when walking long distances, we took a cab to the Lincoln Monument and then walked the entire day.

The Lincoln Monument was a favorite, particularly for Grace who had completed a report on the monument in the second grade.

We walked along the reflecting pool to the World War II Monument and found our state. After Skip spent some time calling out "Roll Tide" to passersby, we posed for more formal pics.

We stopped between the Lincoln and Washington Monuments to let the trio have some fun climbing around on this enormous tree. Having endured the commute to DC like pros, they more than earned an hour to romp around.

Also, we had a really nice vista to enjoy while waiting, what with the monuments and the White House in the distance.

We also got to see Marine I land a few times while we were there.  Needless to say, William George's day was completely made.

Skip and I visited DC previously, but our trip was in August when the temperature was about 98 degrees. Because we were about the collapse from the summer heat, we didn't make the walk over to see the Jefferson Memorial. This time, though, we easily made the short walk.

We had an awesome first day.
