Spelling Bee: Sixth Grade

When Lauren was in kindergarten, she looked up at me one day while reading and said, "I know how to spell chameleon." After spelling it correctly, she just kind of smiled to herself and went about her business. She has loved to spell since, and when the time came to qualify for the upcoming spelling bee this year, we cautioned her that she had moved up a section - to middle school - and would be competing with kids who probably also loved to spell. She came home and told us she was the classroom winner, that she had qualified, and that she would be studying in all of her spare time for the school-wide spelling bee.

Finally, the day came. Again, we cautioned that as a sixth grader, she would be competing against 7th and 8th graders and that we would be proud of her regardless of the finish. She knew all 455 words they were given to study. She was nervous, but she was ready.

The spelling bee lasted over an hour and half, and the contestants went through all 455 words. They sourced extra words (spelling bee overtime), and Lauren finished in third.

Lauren, we are so proud of you!
