Enumerated Update

Hi, friends! How was your weekend?  We had George's swimming lesson, children's theatre and ballet open house.  Other than those activities, here's what's on our minds:

1) iPad: Over the last six months, I have become increasingly aware of the pet peeve many are discussing: the use of iPad as a camera/video camera.  We saw some people boldly using an ipad as a camera during our trip to a water park over spring break, and I saw fellow parents nonchalantly using the ipad to video performers at a recital in May.

Although people seem to have strong opinions about such usage, I haven't been able to form an opinion one way or the other.  Personally, I would never use an iPad at a water park because in our family that would result in near-instant smashing of the device.  Water? Concrete surfaces? Why not just strike the screen with a hammer and get the inevitable over with?  As for filming recitals, graduations, etc., I wouldn't do that either because only the most disciplined users would be able to hold the iPad still enough to obtain watchable footage.  Unless the device is steadied on a table or something, the video is probably going to be jumpy, and I don't need any extra hurdles in that regard.  Since it took almost six years for me to realize I should be filming in landscape mode (versus iPhone's default portrait mode), I tend to keep opinions to myself.  (Landscape means the phone is turned on its side, and the resulting video will be shown in full screen once uploaded.  Portrait means the phone is in its regular position, and the resulting video, although centered, will only occupy about a third of the screen. But you knew that already.  Of course you did. Because I am the last person to figure it out.)

In short, iPad video users? Continue, with my blessing.

(If this is one of your quirks, my best guess is that iPad video users merely want to capture the video on the device of choice for viewing. They want the video on that iPad versus having to go through extra steps to get it in the cloud and then downloaded on the iPad.)

2) Labor Day: School should not resume prior to Labor Day.  Anything sooner is an insult to summer, baseball, apple pie and all things Americana.

3) Speaking of America: Am I the only one wondering how Snowden is hitting it off with Putin?

4) Buzz: Business buzz word of the week? Truthiness, defined as an accepted statement of truth... something known in the gut. Truthiness is attributed to Stephen Colbert, who coined the word in 2005.  Truthiness has been embraced in the business world.

5) Tap: Yesterday we went to an open house at the duo's dance studio in order to be fitted for.... tap shoes.  Their class this year will be compromised of ballet and tap.  They were so excited during lunch and kept going on and on about tap shoes.  Tap shoes!  Tap shoes!  "We're getting tap shoes!!!!"  Finally, William George became infected with their excitement and managed a mostly inaudible, "............. TAP SHOES!!!!!" That's George-speak for I-want-tap-shoes-too.

Their instructor was laughing about how excited they were, and when they pulled a pair of tap shoes out of a box for Gracie to try, her eyes flew open wide and she gasped, "They're soooo pretty!"  After Lauren was fitted, George slide onto the chair for his turn.  Miraculously, we distracted him, narrowly leaving without a third pair.  When I relayed the story to Skip, he said George could have a pair, if I was absolutely certain he was going to be the next Gregory Hines.

George doesn't need tap shoes for his creative outlet. I have something much more suitable for him... DRUMS.

What's happening with you?
