Spelling Bee 2017

Lauren recently entered the school's spelling bee competition.

After a few weeks of determined preparation, the big day arrived, and Lauren nervously made her way to the lunch room where she, along with nineteen other students sat on a stage in front of the third, fourth and fifth grade classes, as well as a few parents.  She survived all of the initial rounds during which time fourteen students were eliminated. The final five hung in there for a few rounds until there were only four... then three, the same three who were last year's finalists. Finally, Lauren's sweet friend tripped up on a word and was eliminated (double "p" on opinionated), leaving Lauren and "B" a fifth grader to slug it out. After a few rounds, Lauren misspelled "lyre" because mom (sheepishly raises hand) had mispronounced the word "lyre" (leer as opposed to liar)(I think I was thinking of the root as being leer as in "lyrical," but I was mistaken.) When they called out lyre with the ridiculous correct pronunciation, Lauren was a little baffled but got really close (l-y-e-r). She forgave me, and happily accepted the honor of second place.

Naturally, we couldn't be prouder of her, and she got to pick the restaurant of her choice for a family celebration that weekend.
